Masaaki A. Kamiya
Hi, I’m Masaaki (he/him)! I am a graduate student intern from UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Social Work, and am currently based in the Triangle area. I identify as a queer, mixed-Asian, cisgender man. I am originally an out-of-stater, but spent most of my childhood in eastern North Carolina. After earning my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Japanese Language and Culture from UNC-Chapel Hill, I lived in rural Japan teaching English for two years. Upon my return to the U.S., I have been working in the North Carolina Public School System in various roles. My background in education and interest in mental health led me to pursue my Masters in Social Work. Although my interest in mental health began in the school system, I am open to working with folks of any age on navigating the challenges that life may throw at us. Through my previous experiences, I have found that creating space and time for hands-on activities can help drive the way we process our thoughts and feelings. Through talking things out, to mindfulness and art-based activities, I hope to help folks achieve their goals and break down the barriers that are in the way of their success.
